Sunday, April 25

2pm

Jazz at the Gallery Artistic Director Kelby MacNayr is a creative and dynamic musical force in Victoria's music scene and beyond. A versatile and gifted percussionist who excels in many musical settings, he has performed with jazz legends Don Thompson, Phil Dwyer and Hugh Fraser and plays regularly with local greats Roy Styffe, Louise Rose, Sara Marreiros and Anne Schaefer.  As a bandleader, he pays deep respect to the great traditions of jazz through his highly successful Art of the Trio series and his work with his own quintet. His latest quintet project brings together some of Canada's most respected players to perform groundbreaking original music and selected works from the deeply swinging tradition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and John Coltrane through modern songwriters like Joe Lovano and Jim Hall. This is a group that will inspire and surprise you with its dedication to the art of musical storytelling and reverence for spontaneous, in-the-moment creation.

The Tony Genge Trio

Sunday, May 30

2pm

Tony Genge is one of Canada’s best-kept secrets and may well be our answer to the multi-talented Wynton Marsalis.  As a deeply swinging jazz pianist with a long performance career, Tony has worked with many Canadian and international jazz artists and can be heard on his own critically acclaimed jazz piano trio CD Blues Walk available on Roadhouse Records.  As a classical composer, he has seen his solo, chamber, and orchestral music commissioned and performed by leading soloists and ensembles throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan. As a writer he has published seminal books on jazz legends Red Garland and Wynton Kelly. And as a highly regarded music professor he has taught at St. Francis Xavier University since 1989. Because he spends much of his time on the east coast, it’s a rare opportunity indeed to hear this inspired, multi-talented exponent of the jazz piano performing live in Victoria. In this special presentation, Tony performs a tribute to the legendary pianist and trio pioneer Ahmad Jamal.
