Valued Friends and Supporters,

As we approach the end of a challenging 2009 it is time to reflect on the past year at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Regardless of the tumultuous economy, this has been another successful year at the Gallery. We welcomed the internationally respected Jon Tupper as our new CEO/Director bringing with him a wealth of experience and he has quickly embraced the community. Jon has already established great leadership and we are confident that his energy, commitment and talent will be very beneficial to the long-term success of the Gallery.

After a year filled with many triumphs and artistic victories, we once again turn to our community for support. Now, more than ever, we rely on individual support to achieve self-sustainability in an era of reduced government funding. This year we proudly presented many exciting exhibitions including Emily Carr and Her Contemporaries, the ambitious internationally focused Assume Nothing: New Social Practice, the amazing Edo: Art of Japan’s Shogun Period and the current Vision Into Reality exhibitions (and full colour publication) which reflect the first three decades
of our great organization.

These exhibitions demonstrate our commitment to bring the best of our collections to you. Your annual support allows us to deliver essential and thought-provoking exhibitions, preserve the collection, develop local artists and provide much needed youth and education programs. In 2010 we will present more than 15 stimulating exhibitions that will engage people locally – including over 30,000 school children – as well as visitors from around the world. The Gallery is proud of its role in promoting what is distinctive and vibrant in the city of Victoria.

Faced with many obstacles in 2009, the Gallery’s board and staff have decided to stay at our historic Moss Street location – working to improve the facilities and visitor experiences, instead of expanding downtown. We believe this is the right decision for the times and we need strong community support to move forward with our plans for the facility. Our goal is to establish an international social and cultural meeting place and enhance the Gallery for all visitors. Making sure annual operating funding is stable is an essential first step in achieving this ‘community legacy’ for future generations.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, as elected representatives of the Gallery’s 3,500 members, we thank you for your past involvement and ask you to consider a donation in 2009 toward our work in building a better community through the visual arts.
